The continuous drought of the past few years has also significantly dried up the water in the Mosul Dam reservoir, Iraq's largest reservoir. Due to which the bottom of this reservoir has become very open. This ancient city can be seen at the bottom of this open reservoir.
A German and Kurdish team of archaeologists said the ancient city was probably the center of the Mittani Empire from 1550 to 1350 BC.
It is believed that the ruins of the settlement date back to the Bronze Age. The multi-storied palaces, towering walls of the fort, observation towers of that empire are also found. It is believed that many valuable and heritage objects can be found inside the palace.
Iraq has been suffering from drought for several decades. There is no rain. The Tigris and Euphrates rivers have also dried up in many parts. Due to which the people have to struggle hard to survive. In such a situation, the authorities started digging the reservoir of Mosul Dam, keeping in mind that the crops would not dry up. The excavation started last January. As a result, the location of this ancient city was found.
About this 3400-year-old city, the representative of the archeology team of the University of Freiburg, Germany. Since the city was directly on the Tigris River basin, it is thought to have played an important role as the core of the Mittani Empire, its eastern junction with present-day northeastern Syria, Ivana Pulzisz said in the statement.
