It is said that 3 crore 65 million euros will be given in aid to overcome the water crisis in those five regions, including Lombardy. The Po River, the longest in Italy, flows for about 650 km from north to east. Meanwhile, the farmers also said that the salt water of the sea is mixing in the river and damaging the crops.
According to Coldiretti, the Italian farmers' association, the drought threatens more than 30 percent of Italy's agricultural production. Several municipalities have already announced water rationing.
Abnormally hot weather and low winter and spring rainfall exacerbated water shortages in northern Italy. The Italian government says the reason for declaring a state of emergency is to deal with the current situation with a strong hand in special measures.
