Mali's foreign ministry and the United Nations' International Organization for Migration (IOM) said 61 people were rescued with the help of the Libyan coastguard. They were taken to the shore last Saturday after being stuck at sea for 9 days.
IOM spokeswoman Safa Maseli said the cause of death of the 22 people was drowning and dehydration, according to survivors. Maselli also said that the health of the survivors was very poor. IOM sent them to the hospital.
He said the rest of the migrants were taken to Al-Maya detention center in Libya. There are concerns that hunger, poverty, conflict and persecution stemming from the war in Ukraine could increase the number of people trying to reach Europe. Already the latest disaster has come to the fore. In addition to the war, analysts are citing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic as a driving force.
