Beijing has threatened to bring Taiwan under the control of military force. A statement issued yesterday (Wednesday) by the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Chinese Cabinet stated such a possibility. Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu explained the Chinese military exercises on Tuesday by claiming that Beijing actually wants to control large swathes of the western Pacific. Wu also believes that China can blockade the entire region by controlling the East and South China Seas as well as the Taiwan Strait. In that case, if China attacks Taiwan, the US and its allies will not be able to provide any assistance. The foreign minister believes that China is making such preparations by conducting military exercises around Taiwan indefinitely.
