The Dhaka Times Desk Now they are paid only 120 rupees! It is really surprising to hear such words. What happens to 120 rupees now? So the demand of tea workers for Rs 300 wage is not unreasonable at all.
However, ignoring that demand, the announcement of increasing wages has only increased by 25 taka to 145 taka! Is this decision at all logical? Although this is said to be decided later. Still, the question is how such a decision was made.
Have we ever thought about how the tea workers are passing the day with only 120 rupees wages? Have we ever thought that how a person will run a household with that 120 rupees wage at the current market price?
The tea garden workers have been protesting for the past 10/12. They are helpless and have left the work and taken to the streets. But their demand is being ignored. What would the government do if the transport workers took to the streets with demands like this?
The tea garden workers have been holding this protest for the past few days with their bare hands despite not getting any wages. They know that as long as the agitation continues, their wages will be stopped. Even then, they are desperate and they are on the road. Now is the time to accept their logical demands. Because they have been working for years for only 120 rupees. But how many more days can this go on? How will they spend their days where they run out of money to buy one kg of rice?
Now the government should accept their demand i.e. demand of 300 rupees wages. Experts feel that it is now a matter of time to accept their just demand of 300 rupees wages instead of mocking these ordinary workers by raising only 25 rupees.
Like 167 tea gardens in the country, 92 tea gardens in Moulvibazar, Habiganj and Sylhet, tea workers held human chains, rallies and protest marches in the garden areas as part of the strike from Saturday morning.
It should be noted that in December 2021, a bilateral agreement was also signed between the leaders of the Bangladesh Tea Workers Union and the plantation owners organization Bangladesh Tea Sangsad. At that time it was decided to increase the wages of workers to 300 rupees. But even after 19 months of the contract, the owner has not implemented that promise. Now the question is why the agreement was not implemented? What interest has not seen the light of day that agreement? So who is responsible for this? Find out today.
