6 hospitals were damaged in that clash. Fears have been expressed that this incident may turn into a political crisis and a major armed conflict in the country.
The report also said that armed forces of the internationally recognized government tried to repel a fleet of militias loyal to their rival, the eastern parliament-recognized Fathi Bashagha. At this time, explosions were also heard in several areas of the capital Tripiali. Black smoke can also be seen rising from different parts of the city, according to international media sources.
According to the Ministry of Health of Tripoli, at least 23 people were killed and 140 injured in the conflict. Ambulances could not reach the affected areas.
The UN Mission in Libya has called for an "immediate end" to the ongoing armed conflict, including indiscriminate medium and heavy shelling around civilian populated areas.
US Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland said in a statement that Washington "condemned" the escalation of violence and called for an "immediate ceasefire and UN-mediated talks".
