The Dhaka Times Desk According to Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, the fare per kilometer of Metrorail (MRT Line-6) has been set at Tk 5 and the minimum fare at Tk 20.
He said this at the inauguration of the 'Metrorail Exhibition and Information Centre' at the Metrorail depot area in the capital's Uttara today (September 6).
Apart from fixing the fare of 5 taka per kilometer and the minimum fare of 20 taka, the fare from Uttara to Kamalapur has been set at 100 taka. It is informed that the rent of freedom fighters will be waived.
Previously, the committee formed to determine the fare of Metrorail recently proposed to fix the fare from Uttara to Motijheel at 90 taka and a minimum of 20 taka. It is also proposed that a passenger can visit a maximum of two stations at the lowest fare.
Obaidul Quader said, “Metrorail will have special facilities for monthly, weekly, family and card fares. People with special needs will also get special concessions every time they travel.”
Metrorail authorities said that all activities up to the detailed design for the 1.16 km extension of MRT Line-6 from Motijheel to Kamalapur have been completed. Currently its service verification is in progress. The land acquisition process is also in final stages.
Secretary Road Transport and Highways Department ABM Amin Ullah Noori, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh Ito Naoki, Chief Representative of ZAICA in Bangladesh Iho Hayekawa and Managing Director of Metrorail M, A, N, Siddique were among others present on the occasion.
It is believed that the country's first metro rail will be able to carry 60,000 passengers per hour and 500,000 passengers per day. The 6-coach train stops at 16 stations from Uttara to Motijheel every 38 minutes and can carry a maximum of 2,308 passengers.
If all goes well, metro rail trains will run with passengers for the first time in the country next December. In the first phase, this metro rail will run from Uttara in the capital to Agargaon.
The work of 9 stations on this route is already nearing completion. From entering the stations to boarding the train, technology is used at every step of this project.
Note that the official trial run of Metrorail was started on August 29 last year. The train departs from Uttara station and reaches Pallavi in about one and a half hours, visiting 4 stations and returning to the depot. This train runs at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour.
According to the project officials, the metro rail will run regularly at a speed of 100 kmph. According to the project plan, there will be a total of 16 stations from Uttara to Motijheel. Metrorail can transport 60 thousand passengers per hour. Later the project was extended from Motijheel to Kamalapur station.
