The Dhaka Times Desk At least 15 people are reported dead in a prison riot in Ecuador. Many more people were injured in that riot.
In a report, the British news media BBC has given information that riots occur in prisons in the country after a few days. At least 15 people were killed and 20 others injured in a riot at Cotopaxi No. 1 prison in Lalachunga on Monday (October 3), a spokesman for SNAI, the country's prisons management agency, said.
Tactical units are continuing operations to take control of the prison in the southern city of Latacunga.
There are 4 thousand 300 prisoners in that prison. It is one of the largest prisons in the country. The living conditions in the prisons are dire as there are more inmates than their capacity. That's why President Guillermo Lasso launched the country's first inmate census in August to make prisons more livable.
It should be noted that since February 2021, more than 400 prisoners have been killed in riots in the country's prisons. That's why the country's conservative President Guillermo Lasso's government blames various gangs for controlling different regions and drug trafficking routes.
