250 pilot whales washed ashore on Chatham Island on Friday (October 7) and three days later around 240 pilot whales were reported dead on Pitt Island. The Guardian gave this information.
After such a tragic incident, the New Zealand government said yesterday (October 11) that the rescue operation was canceled due to the large presence of sharks in the area.
Rescue officials said, 'Due to the risk of shark attacks to both humans and whales, our trained rescue teams apply anesthesia to the whales to ease their suffering. These islands are so far from mainland New Zealand that it is almost impossible to carry out a rescue operation there.'
Dave Lundquist, the New Zealand government's technical marine advisor, told the media, 'Due to the risk of shark attacks to both humans and whales, our trained rescue team euthanized the whales. This decision is never taken lightly, but is taken as an alternative in desperation. The carcasses of the whales are left on the beach, so that they can decompose naturally and merge back into nature.'
According to the country's official statistics, about 300 whales die in New Zealand every year. Such whale deaths are nothing unusual in the Chatham Islands. About 700 whales were stranded in 2017.
It is not yet clear to the scientists which coast the whales are coming to. However, they think that those whales lost their way and got stuck on the shore in search of food.
