The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has revealed information about value added tax or VAT evasion at an event organized in Bangladesh with Bollywood actress Nora Fatehi and other foreign artists. This information was highlighted in a letter signed by Mohammad Abdus Sadek, Second Secretary of VAT Department of NBR yesterday (Tuesday).
In this regard, NBR Director (Public Relations) Syed A Mu'men said, according to the Musak Act, there is an obligation to submit a bank guarantee and take permission for entertainment and cultural events with the participation of foreign artists, but the organizing organization did not accept any declaration and permission along with submission of bank guarantee. That is why the VAT department has given instructions to collect the applicable VAT.
He also said that in addition to the remuneration mentioned in the contract for the participation of foreign artists in any kind of event in Bangladesh, other expenses paid for the actors or actresses and the crew such as travel expenses payable by air or other means of transportation, food expenses etc. A letter was issued from the Income Tax Department informing the Income Tax Department of the obligation to pay Income Tax at the rate of 30 per cent under the provisions of Section 56 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 1984 on the total amount paid and payable. Earlier, in another letter on November 13, the Income Tax Department of NBR objected to the fact that Wes did not comply with the obligation to pay income tax on the same issue.
According to the letter sent to the Commissioner of Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate of Dhaka North, the VAT Department was informed that foreign artist Nora Fatehi and other artists will participate in an event organized by Women's Leadership Corporation. In this regard, there is also an obligation to submit bank guarantee and obtain permission as per declaration related to entertainment and cultural events with participation of foreign artists as per Musak Act.
