Mahathir Mohammed's miserable defeat in his own seat!

The Dhaka Times Desk Malaysia's veteran leader and former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has been defeated in an election for the first time in his 53-year political career. Many see this as the end of his long political career.

Voting for the general election was held in Malaysia yesterday, Saturday (November 19). 97-year-old Mahathir lost from his own seat.

Mahathir lost to a rival candidate for the first time since 1969, Reuters reported. This leader who ruled Malaysia for more than two decades became the fourth out of 5 candidates in his parliamentary seat!

Previously, Mahathir said in an interview that if he loses the election, he will withdraw from politics.

Aljazeera journalist Florence Louis said from Kuala Lumpur, "A surprising thing happened, Mahathir didn't just lose, he lost horribly." Even his security was confiscated. He did not even get one-eighth of the votes cast! Mahathir's party could not win a single seat.

It should be noted that Mahathir Mohammad was the Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1981 to 2003. He came back to power in 2018 amid allegations of widespread corruption in the ruling party. He successfully ran the country and became a popular leader.
