The Dhaka Times Desk World's oldest primary school student, Priscilla Citieni, has died. This Kenyan woman was 99 years old! The British news media BBC gave this information with reference to his grandson.
Priscilla Saitiani's grandson, Sammy Chepsire, said Priscilla died on Wednesday (November 16) of complications from chest pains. He was still healthy and attended classes till three days before his death.
He could not go to school for the last few days due to chest pain. A French film inspired by Priscilla's achievements for her contribution to women's education was also recognized by UNESCO. The locals affectionately call him 'Gogo'. It means 'grandmother' in the local Kalenjin language.
Chepsi said they are also grateful for his centenary life. He made them all proud.
According to UNESCO, Priscilla Siteyeni enrolled in school at the age of 94 after persuading the headmaster of a local village school in Kenya's Rift Valley. After this incident he was hailed as a role model in his community and the outside world.
In an interview given to the United Nations agency, Priscilla said, young mothers in Kenya stop going to school after giving birth for fear of social embarrassment or stigma. He wanted them to be re-motivated to go back to school. Education is your future. Education stays with you forever and once you get it you never lose it.
When the French film called 'Gogo' was made with his inspiration, he flew to France for the first time last year and met First Lady Brigitte Macro.
The film's co-writer Patrick Pacis paid tribute to her on November 17 and said in a Twitter post, "Priscilla's message about women's education will truly be immortalized."
