The Dhaka Times Desk The country's government wants to relax the rules on granting citizenship to immigrants living in Germany. If the plan is implemented, the immigrants will get the benefits of dual citizenship and citizenship by birth.
The German government has taken initiatives to simplify the process of acquiring citizenship for immigrants. Meanwhile, the Home Ministry has also submitted a draft report.
According to the existing rules, immigrants can apply for citizenship only if they have lived in Germany for 8 years. In the draft law, it has been replaced by 5 years. Even those who have acquired 'special skills for integration or assimilation into German society' can still apply after 3 years. However, the ministry said that the matter is still under discussion and nothing has been finalized yet.
In case of citizenship by birth
Currently, children of immigrants in Germany do not receive citizenship by birth. It may change if there is a new law. According to reports, German-born children of long-term legal immigrants will receive citizenship.
Ministers from Germany's 16 states have previously urged the federal government to quickly introduce the provision. Last week, citing the ministry, the media 'The Local' reported that the facility for immigrants to get dual citizenship is being kept in the new law. Currently, Germany only offers this benefit to European Union and Swiss citizens.
Meanwhile, during the formation of the government, German Chancellor Olaf Schulz's SPD and the pro-environment Green Party and the pro-business FDP reached a consensus on changing Germany's citizenship and immigration laws. All three parties want to ease residency and asylum application rules for immigrants, including provisions for dual citizenship.
However, some politicians have opposed this initiative. Thorsten Frye, a member of parliament from the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU), responded to Bild on the matter, saying, 'German passports cannot be trashed under any circumstances.'
Andrea Lindholtz, a politician from the Christian Social Union, worried that if the proposals became law, 'foreigners living in Germany would be deprived of a great incentive to integrate.' - Deutsche Welle.
