Igor Sushko, executive director of the Washington-based nonprofit Wind of Change Research Group, translated the Russian-language e-mails into English. He later gave them to US-based online magazine Newsweek.
In an e-mail sent to Osechkin in March, the FSB member wrote that Russia was preparing to engage in military conflict with Japan over the Kuril Islands. However, after a few months, Russia decided to launch an operation in Ukraine.
Hence electronic warfare helicopters were monitoring the movement and the Russian propaganda machine was also activated. As part of this there was pressure to label the Japanese as 'Nazis' and 'Fascists'.
