The Dhaka Times Desk The island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic is decorated with garlands of lights and flowers. The occasion of this outfit is the 190th birthday of one of the inhabitants of the island, the Seychelles Giant Tortoise!
This turtle's name is Jonathan. It is believed that this Jonathan is one of the oldest animals in the world. By celebrating the 190th birthday, this turtle was given in 191 years!
That year 1832. Charles Darwin, the creator of evolution, landed in Puerto Prao. But evolution has not been discovered yet. An outbreak of cholera in London also occurred that year. Jonathan was born the same year. After that, two world wars, thousands of ups and downs of the world, he is still moving forward. Jonathan is the oldest of the creatures that walk the earth.
Jonathan the turtle lives in the governor's residence on Helena Island. The doors have been opened on this occasion. People are coming to witness the history by putting their hands on the ongoing history. Jonathan is believed to have been born in 1832. By 1882 he was brought from Sicily to St Helena. Since then the Governor's residence has been his only address.
However, according to Matt Joshua, head of tourism in St. Helena, Jonathan's real age is over 200 years ago. However, 1832 is considered as his birth year.
Jonathan has already lost his sense of sight and sense of smell due to age. But his ear strength is still intact. His face twitched at the slightest sound. Jonathan's doctor, however, says otherwise. According to him, even though his body and mind are good, Jonathan's mood is high. From the sun's Om Makha in the morning to the unintelligible conversation with the doctor - everything is worth watching!
However, Jonathan is not alone in the governor's residence. He is accompanied by 3 other giant turtles - David, Emma and Fred. The age of the three people is over a hundred, but to Jonathan they are still like naive babies!
