The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), an international environmental organization, says that many animals and plants, from the gecho frog to the basking shark, are on the Red List of Threatened Extinction. Scientists say that about 1 lakh 50 thousand 388 species are threatened with extinction. Out of which more than 42 thousand species are likely to become extinct.
According to the new study, researchers estimate that 6 percent of the world's plants and animals will disappear by 2050. And by the end of this century, this extinction rate will increase to 13 percent. As global warming worsens, 27 percent of Earth's plants and animals could become extinct by 2100.
Helsinki University professor, scientist and co-author of the research paper. Giovanni Strona said, 'We used a supercomputer in the research and created a virtual world from the ground. Then we study the fate of thousands of species on Earth.'
The Guardian reported that researchers are studying more than 33,000 species in the virtual world.
Cory Bradshaw, another co-author of the paper and professor at Flinders University in Australia, said, 'This study is unique because it also provides early insights into the impact of climate change on biodiversity, the collapse of food chains and the extinction of many species.'
Professor Corey Bradshaw also says that 'every species is dependent on others in some way. Just think, predator species are losing their prey due to climate change, parasites are losing their hosts due to deforestation, flowering plants are losing their pollinators due to global warming.' It is believed that many species will become extinct in this way.
