The Dhaka Times Desk The United Nations organization UNESCO said that 86 journalists were killed in the world in 2022. Murders of journalists rose again last year after three consecutive years of decline.
From 2019 to 2021, an average of 58 journalists were murdered annually. 99 journalists were killed in 2018. In 2022, 19 journalists were killed the most in Mexico. Also 10 people lost their lives in Ukraine and 9 in Haiti. Three-quarters of journalists are killed in non-conflict areas.
More than half of the 86 journalists were from Latin America. Journalists have been killed for covering organized crime, armed conflict and the rise of militancy. Journalists have also lost their lives reporting on corruption, environmental crimes, abuse of power and protests.
UNESCO reports that the impunity rate for killing journalists is also about 86 percent, which is surprisingly high. This rate is the highest in the last 5 years, the United Nations said.
Apart from the murders, last year (2022) journalists were also subjected to other forms of persecution. These include disappearances, abductions, forced detention, harassment with lawsuits and online violence, with women journalists in particular being victims of such violence, the report noted.
