NASA chief Bill Nelson said the goal is to create future commercial airplanes that are "more fuel efficient, with benefits for the environment, the commercial aviation industry and passengers worldwide."

"If we're successful, we'll see these technologies on airplanes," Bill Nelson said in a statement Wednesday. This aircraft is expected to transport passengers in the sky in the 2030s.'

The contract also calls for NASA and Boeing to build, test and fly a full-scale single-aisle demonstrator aircraft.
