The Dhaka Times Desk At least 58 migrants have died after a boat capsized in rough seas off Italy's southern coast.
A child is also among the dead. Many of the boat's passengers, however, survived. Italy's coast guard said around 80 lives were saved.
It is understood that the boat, loaded with more passengers than its capacity, sank off the coast of Calabria, Italy. The boat, carrying about 150 migrants, was trying to get ashore near the town of Croton when it hit a rock and split in two. Many bodies were recovered from the beach of a nearby tourist town.
Many people enter Italy illegally by sea every year from Africa. According to a local official, the boat left 3/4 days ago from the Turkish coastal city of Izmir. A local news agency reported that the boat's passengers were nationals of Somalia, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The news agency also reported that the boat collided with the shore rocks due to high waves and sank. Italy's fire department said on its page on the Telegram messaging app that 'several migrants have died and around 40 have survived.'
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who was elected last year on a promise to crack down on illegal immigration, expressed deep sorrow for the accident and the deaths. But he blamed human traffickers for the tragedy.
In a statement, he said, 'They are playing with the lives of men and women by living the ticket with the assurance of safe journey. He said that the government is trying and will do so that such a journey does not start and such a tragedy does not happen.
