The early mosque of Jhenaidah

The mosque you see is the historic mosque of Jhenaidah. The center of the dome of this mosque is broken about 2 feet. The dome looks like a rounded and upturned cup and is very pleasing.

The mosque is located in Belat Daulatpur Mauza of Barobazar Union. Gora (Gorai) Mosque is a unique monument of Islamic tradition. There is a pond to the east of the mosque. There was also a ghat to go from the mosque to the pond. The presence of broken bricks and traces of rooted bricks at places also prove it.

This mosque was in the best condition among the existing mosques. In 1983, after excavation by the Department of Archaeology, a grave was discovered next to the mosque. It is believed by many to be the shrine of a dervish called Gorai. After his name, this mosque is called Gogar (Gorai) mosque.

It was probably built by Hussain Shah or his son Nasrat Shah. Similarities have been found with this mosque in Sattam and Khania Dighi mosques in Gaur, Sura mosque and Dewangarh mosque in Dinajpur, Atiya mosque in Tangail and Awalia mosque in Sinhdar.
