A process called 'Know Your Customer' (KYC) is used to open bank accounts or update information, the report said. Such a message goes to every customer. Those customers of the bank have lost money by clicking on such messages.
An incident that happened to at least 40 customers over three days. Mumbai Police is investigating the incident. They have also prohibited citizens from clicking on any such message.
A message is also sent to customers saying the account has been blocked for updates, Indian news outlet NDTV reported. After clicking on that message, the clickers go to a fake website of the bank.
Customers are then asked to fill in account ID, password and other confidential information. This is how the cycle steals customer information. In this way they took information of 40 bank customers including TV actress Sweta Memon. Sweta has also filed a complaint with the concerned police station in this incident.
In the complaint, the actress wrote that, 'Last March 2, I received a message on my mobile. I assumed it was from my bank. On clicking that message, I was given the account number, password and OTP.'
This female actress also wrote, 'I got a call from a woman shortly after the message. The woman claimed to be a bank official. He also told me about another OTP coming to my phone. I then give him OTP. Then 57 thousand 636 rupees disappeared from my account!'
