The Dhaka Times Desk The 'Inclusion Symposium' was held for the first time in the country in collaboration with International School Dhaka (ISD) and Bangladesh Finance.

Apart from highlighting the needs of children with special needs, this Inclusion Symposium was held with the focus on how to increase the inclusion of all types of students in the country's schools. It is the right of every child to have the opportunity to receive a quality education to overcome all odds and develop to their full potential. From this idea, this Inclusion Symposium was held at the ISD campus on March 3.

Daniel Sobel, CEO of Inclusion Expert, President of International Forums of Inclusion Practitioners and Founder of Global Inclusive Teaching Initiative was present as the chief guest at the symposium.

He also led two workshops held at the symposium. In addition, he has worked as an advisor to various educational institutions, regional levels and countries, UNESCO, the United Nations and the European Union. He conducted two workshops on 'Establishing the Inclusive Classroom' and 'How to Tackle the Most Challenging Scenarios'.     

Many people think that ensuring inclusion in the classroom is laborious and costly; But the matter is quite simple and teachers themselves can play a role in creating an inclusive environment. The first workshop was conducted with this idea in mind and the participants got an idea about it by participating in the workshop.

In addition, the participants also got various practical ideas to apply in the classroom. The second workshop focused on behavior. In this workshop, Daniel Sobel discusses different approaches to dealing with behavioral challenges. He also discussed the most challenging situations in teaching.

International School Dhaka's Advancement Center Leader Dr. Mira van der Wilson said, “I am happy that around 300 people from all over Dhaka participated in this event. Even many people came from Chittagong to participate in this event. I am amazed that so many people are interested in learning about this topic. Organizing this event and being a part of such an event is definitely an inspiring and great experience.” A total of 25 workshops were conducted by ISD faculty and various NGO representatives at the symposium. Dr. was present as a guest speaker from various NGOs. Ashiq Salim, Consultant Psychiatrist, PHWC; Thuji Grace, Clinical Head, Inner Circle Pvt Ltd; Jain Nadaraju, Founder, White Lodge Services, Founder Director, Aspire Center for Inclusive Education and Training; Nazish Arman and Prannoy Bhuiyan, Suchana Foundation; and Ganesh Kanapathi, Co-Founder, The Guild International College. The workshop was also conducted by Kuri Chisim, Khalid Afif Mehran and Farasha Khan, BRAC's ECD Program Specialist, Faculty Member, Masters in ECD Program and Psychologist, IED.  
 
Speakers from ISD included Tom Johnston, Learning Support Specialist MYP and DP; Sekai Chitaokire, Secondary Social Emotional Counselor; Shayla Kabir, Learning Support Specialist, Primary School; Heather Rene Spieth, Lead, MYP & DP Language Acquisition, Chris Boyle, Secondary Principal; Marisa Suttapa, teacher; Zomari Veenstra, Teacher, EAL, Early Years; Rebecca Ann Churchill, MYP Learning Support Specialist; Jessica Bowen, Primary Counselor; Ayaz Alam Kayami, MYP Humanities Teacher; and Heather Nesbitt, Primary Learning Support Specialist.         

Through this arrangement, the participants' understanding and working ability on the respective subject is enhanced. The workshop served as a unique opportunity for professional development for those working with children with special needs and other related professions. News press release.
