The Dhaka Times Desk In the southern Indian state of Karnataka, a group of young men walked about a hundred kilometers to a temple to pray for a wife!
The matter has also generated much discussion and humor on social media. However, rights activists say that a picture of the socio-economic crisis of the region has emerged through this incident.
According to a BBC news, the march was started by a group of 30 people and in the end about 60 young people took part in it. All of them are farmers of Mandya district of that state. For decades, the gap between the male and female ratio has been widening, and as a result, many young men are unable to find brides to marry. Also due to the low income of many or the fact that women choose different castes, there is also a crisis of brides
Mallesha DP is one of those who took part in the Padayatra, known as Padayatra of Singles or Brahmacharigalu Padayatra. They visited the Mahadeshawara temple whose devotees believe that their hopes will be fulfilled this time.
“I worked when I was old enough to love. Then I earned money. Now I have everything but I can't find a bride to marry," Mallesha told reporters. But his age is now 33. However, he feels that he has already crossed the right age to get married in his area. Shivprasad KM, the organizer of the march, says that after the program was announced, as many as two hundred people registered to participate.
"But later many did not participate because the local media portrayed it negatively," said Sivaprasad.
Originally Mandia was a fertile agricultural region of India. Sugarcane is mostly produced here. However, many people are losing interest in the profession due to the decrease in income from agriculture recently.
31-year-old Krishna, another participant in the march, said that many people now feel that families in agriculture are insecure about the income of the youth.
Mr. Mallesha said that at least 30 women rejected his marriage proposals in the last few years. He said his profession and living in a very remote area are the main reasons for this.
"Our living space is small and the income is low," said Mr. Shiva Prasad According to him, it is rather easy for those who have business besides this profession to get married.
It is to be noted that when these unmarried youths were participating in the march in the hope of marriage, a group of farmers were protesting for the fair price of sugarcane. However, many people also blame the patriarchy for today's in-law discrimination. When the participants of this padayatra were born, the issue of male-female ratio in the region was also revealed in various media.
