Strikes in Sri Lanka against rising cost of living

The Dhaka Times Desk Strikes erupt in Sri Lanka over rising cost of living and tax hikes. Thousands of workers from more than 40 trade unions, including government employees of the country's ports, hospitals, schools and railways, participated in the strike.

According to a report, due to the strike (March 15), the operations of hospitals, educational institutions, offices and courts were completely closed. Rail communication was severely disrupted. If the decision to take loans is not cancelled, they have warned of strict agitation including strike.

The government has also taken several measures to meet the conditions for a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which has led Sri Lanka to impose additional taxes and cut government spending. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe was in the face of public fire from the beginning.
