Iran's top Shia religious leader shot dead

The Dhaka Times Desk Ayatollah Abbas Ali Soleimani (75), the top Shia religious leader of Iran, was shot dead by miscreants. The incident took place on Wednesday (April 25) at a bank in Babulsar city of Mazandaran province in the northern part of the country.

Ayatollah Abbas Ali Soleimani was killed in an armed attack on Wednesday morning. The attacker has been arrested. The investigation in this matter is continuing.'

The governor of Mazandaran province said that the attacker was a security guard of the bank. He has been arrested. However, no details about the motive of the attack are yet known.

Ayatollah Soleimani was a member of the Assembly of Experts. Who mainly appoints the supreme leader of Iran. This committee monitors the activities of the Supreme Leader and also disqualifies him according to religious rules. The number of members of this Assembly of Experts is 88 people.

Previously, he also served as the personal representative of the current supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khomeini. He retired in 2019 after serving for 17 years.

Perham Ghobadi of the BBC's Farsi department said Soleimani was a hardliner. He also used to make gender-segregating speeches in all places of the Islamic Republic, including the workplace.

He also said that on Wednesday around 10:30 am local time, he went to Babulsar Bank Belly for personal work. At this time, he was suddenly attacked.
