Japanese parents believe that crying on this occasion will bring good health to their children.
According to media reports, this 'Baby Sumo's Cry' event was organized at Sensoji Temple in Tokyo. It features two children facing each other in their parents' arms in a sumo ring. The show's staff wears monster masks and tries to scare children and make them cry.
The sumo referee will declare the child who cries first as the winner. A Japanese mother named Hisai Watanabe brought her 8-month-old baby to the temple. He said, 'We can understand the health status of children by hearing their cries. My child can be nervous though. That's why she didn't cry much at the event.'
The Baby Sumo Kanna Competition was organized by the Asakusa Tourism Federation. Shigemi Fujii, chairman of the federation, said, 'One might think that it is a terrible thing to see children crying like this. But we Japanese believe that the louder a baby cries, the better it will get.'
