Yesterday (Friday) around 7:30 pm, this terrible accident took place near Bahanaga station, 40 km from Baleshwar station.
Amitabh Sharma, spokesperson of the country's railway ministry, said that at least 15 coaches of the Kormandal Express from Howrah to Chennai derailed and fell on the side tracks. The accident took place when the Yeshwantpur-Howrah superfast train coming from the other direction hit the derailed coaches. A freight train also met with an accident there at that time.
A source says that the Howrah-Bangalore Express train derailed first. Cormandal Express hit those coaches and fell on top of the freight train.
According to various Indian media reports, the country's railway authorities and fire service started rescue operations quickly after the accident. Officials said many were trapped in the twisted carriages. Accident disrupts train movement. At least 5 express trains have been canceled on this route. The Ministry of Railways has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh to the injured.
