The mosque you can see is the Sura Mosque of Dinajpur, a landmark of Muslim architecture. However, many people know this mosque as Shah Shuja Mosque.
A unique example of Muslim architecture, this mosque has stood as a witness of time for almost 500 years. This mosque is located in Chouragacha Mauza of Ghoraghat Union No. 4 of Ghoraghat Upazila of Dinajpur. People from different districts flocked to this mosque to see the architectural style.
Along with the construction style of this ancient mosque, there are various legends about its naming. Some people call this mosque as solar mosque. Others say Sura Mosque. To some, this mosque is also known as Shah Shuja Mosque. This historic landmark is known by different names to each.
The main structure of the mosque is built on a platform 4 feet high. 40 feet from north to south and 26 feet from east to west. There are total 4 domes including one big and 3 small ones. The walls of the entire mosque including the main room of 16 square feet are decorated with original terracotta aesthetic. The mosque also has a square domed prayer hall on the top and a small 3-domed verandah on the eastern side. The wall of the mosque is 1.80 meters wide, made of small bricks with lime mortar. There are also 4 black stone minarets at the four corners of the prayer room and 2 at the verandah.
