Australia bans building Russian embassy next to parliament

The Dhaka Times Desk Australia has announced a ban on the creation of new Russian embassies by passing the law. The embassy was being built near Parliament House in Canberra.

Australia's argument is that having the Russian embassy near their Parliament House could be a cause of danger.

ডয়চে ভেলের এক খবরে বলা হয়, অস্ট্রেলিয়ার প্রধানমন্ত্রী অ্যান্থনি আলবানিজ বৃহস্পতিবার বলেছেন যে, ‘নিরাপত্তা বাহিনীর রিপোর্টের ভিত্তিতেই এই সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে। পার্লামেন্ট ভবনের কাছে রাশিয়াকে দূতাবাস বানানোর জন্য যে জমি লিজ দেওয়া হয়েছিল, সেটি বাতিল করা হয়েছে। পার্লামেন্টে পেশ করার দুই ঘণ্টার মধ্যে দুটি কক্ষেই তা পাস হয়ে গেছে।’

The Russian Embassy was being built on that land. Last month, a federal court ruled in Russia's favor.

The local Canberra authority had previously canceled the lease. They argued that the land was leased out in 2008. But for a long time, Russia has left it. The condition was that Russia would complete the construction within 3 years.

He also said that the security agencies have given a clear message to the government. Having the Russian Embassy so close to Parliament is not at all desirable. That's a big security risk.

দেশটির স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী জানিয়েছেন, ‘ওই জায়গাটা একেবারেই পার্লামেন্টের পাশে। ওখানে কোনো দূতাবাসকে ভবন তৈরির অনুমতি দেওয়া হবে না।’

The former Soviet-era embassy is now the Russian embassy. This place is far from the Parliament.

Australia also stopped importing aluminum and bauxite from Russia after the Ukraine war.
