5 people were killed in Jamaat's 48-hour strike

The Dhaka Times Desk In 2 days, 5 people were killed and many injured in the 48-hour strike called by Jamaat-e-Islami to protest the execution order of Quader Mullah.

In the last 24 hours of the hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami, massive violence has occurred in different parts of the country. A Jamaat worker named Delwar Hossain (34) was shot dead in a police clash with Jamaat-Shibir workers in Meherpur. Meanwhile, the police pickup van was burnt.

CNG autorickshaw passenger Masud (27) was killed in a beating by Jamaat-Shibir workers in Chandidasgati of Sirajganj Sadar Upazila. Camp workers set fire to a passenger bus in Bhogra area of Gazipur. At least 10 passengers were injured, including the bus driver Nazrul Islam (40). The body of truck driver Sikander (50) got burnt in the petrol fire given by Jamaat-Shibir cadres in Chouddagram of Comilla. He is now fighting death in the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Jamaat-Shibir workers also set fire to a truck during the strike in Sherpur of Bogra. Truck driver Samchul Haque (52) was severely burnt in this incident.

Yesterday morning Jamaat-Shibir blocked the road at the outskirts of Meherpur city. When the police went to disperse the protesters, the police clashed with the protesters. At one point the protesters set fire to the police van. On the other hand, Jamaat-Shibir clashed with the police in Gourinagar area of Meherpur Mujibnagar road, 4 police constables including OC Rabiul Islam of Mujibnagar police station and 8 people of Jamaat-Shibir were injured. Meanwhile, a Jamaat worker, Delwar, was seriously injured in the firing by the police. He died on the way to Kushtia General Hospital.

Besides, during the hartal, there were attacks on law and order forces in various places including Sylhet, Rajshahi, Jaipurhat. Three police officers were injured in an attack by strike supporters in Barisal's Banaripara.

Before this, 3 people were killed and many injured in the strike on the first day yesterday. This strike was violent in recent times. Incidents of police being attacked and drivers being held and petrol poured on them and set on fire have also taken place during this strike.

It should be noted that Jamaat-e-Islami called a 48-hour strike on Wednesday and Thursday to protest the execution of Abdul Quader Mollah, assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami.
