Enterprises in the software and startup sector under threat

A roundtable discussion on "Tech Startups: Income Tax Policy Support".

The Dhaka Times Desk Income tax exemption for software and information technology services sector ends in June this year. If the National Board of Revenue does not extend the exemption period, the potential development of this sector is going to be threatened. This will also affect the implementation of the Smart Bangladesh plan announced by the government.

This is what the entrepreneurs of this sector have feared. A round table discussion on “Tech Startup : Income Tax Policy Support” was held at Daily Star Auditorium. 20 budding startup entrepreneurs of the country, representatives of several organizations investing in the startup sector, tax experts and BASIS leaders spoke on the occasion.

Speakers said that many incentives are being offered to entrepreneurs in our neighboring countries to encourage new startup investment in the technology sector. Long-term tax exemptions are the most effective of such incentives. Our country has also received nearly $1 billion in foreign investment in the technology startup sector in the last 5 years. If the exemption is removed after June this year, then on the one hand investment will decrease, on the other hand there will be a fear that a lot of software export money will not come to the country, which will put more pressure on the country's dollar reserves.

Fahim Masroor, former president of BASIS, the main organizer of the program, said that according to the calculations of the National Board of Revenue, the government is losing about Tk 1,470 crore in revenue every year due to tax exemptions in the ICT sector. As such, companies in this sector are making a profit of 5 thousand crore rupees annually. He said, this account does not reflect the real picture in any way. At present, more than 5000 small entrepreneurs of software and information technology services make a maximum profit of Tk 1,000 crore annually, out of which the government will get a maximum of Tk 300 crore if tax exemption benefits are removed. He urged the Board of Revenue to conduct a company-level survey to determine the true profitability of the sector.

Shamim Ahsan, the former president of BASIS, said that the benefits of the policy support that the government is already providing to the IT sector have just started to come. He said no one in the sector wants the tax exemption to remain indefinitely. However, if it is withdrawn now, the government will lose more taxes in the next five to ten years than the small additional tax it will get in the very short term. Also, many entrepreneurs will leave the country to start business abroad, which will cause the biggest loss to new job creation.

Samira Zuberi Himika, Senior Vice President of BASIS, Shaukat Hossain, Director of Venture Capital Association, Saeed Ahmed, Head of Policy Research Institute I-I-D also spoke on the occasion. Founders and K-founders of 20 startups also spoke. The keynote was presented by Snehashish Barua, a startup business and tax expert.

How to prevent dengue

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral fever. This fever is different from other viral or bacterial fevers. However, this fever is not contagious in any way. This viral fever can occur alone or in combination with other viruses (chikungunya, yellow fever, Burma forest, flu, respiratory syncytial) and bacteria (pneumococcus).

Dengue fever is divided into two categories depending on the severity of symptoms and fever.

1. Common dengue fever

2. Dengue fever with bleeding.

In the case of common dengue fever, the following symptoms are mainly seen-

1. Sudden high fever lasting 2 to 7 days.

2. Severe headache.

3. Pain behind the eyes.

4. Along with the fever, red rash appears all over the body.

5. Severe pain in whole body as well as back pain.

6. Nausea or vomiting.

7. A rash or red bumps on the skin.

In case of dengue fever with bleeding:

1. Bleeding from nose, mouth or vomiting with high fever within 2 to 48 hours.

2. Fluid accumulation in chest or abdomen along with fever.

If any of these symptoms appear, seek medical attention immediately.

On the other hand

Wait at home for the first 3 days of fever. On the other hand, sponge the whole body with water every now and then. This will reduce the level of fever. Drink enough water and rest. After that, if the fever does not decrease or if it continues to increase after some time, consult a doctor immediately.

Things to do to prevent Dengue:

1. Try to keep the surroundings of the house as clean as possible.

2. If there are flower tubs or broken plastic bottles, can shells, tires or polythene inside the house, clean them quickly and drain the accumulated water from the flower tubs.

3. Spray or fog at least 3 times a week to kill mosquitoes.

4. You can keep mosquito repellent cream with you while going out.

5. After evening, younger and older members of the household should use mosquito nets.

6. Clean up any accumulated rain water, as this is the time when Aedes mosquitoes lay their eggs.

7. On the other hand, you can use mats along with mosquito nets to avoid mosquito infestation.

8. Since Aedes mosquitoes bite during the day, it is important to avoid sleeping with mosquito nets while sleeping during the day. Source: https://dmpnews.org
