The chemicals used in dyeing clothes are so toxic that the excess dye often mixes with water in nearby rivers or other bodies of water, changing the color of the water to a condition where sunlight cannot reach underwater green plants and algae. As a result, food production there is disrupted to a large extent. As a remedy for this problem, four Columbia scientists set out to discover a natural, quick and easy system. He found their desired results from a type of vegetable fiber called 'fico'.
These fibers, commonly used in making coffee bags, are first prepared through a special process. In the process, the fibers are arranged in such a way that they can hold manganese oxide molecules between them. The fibers with these molecules are then placed in contaminated water. The manganese oxide molecules in the interstices of the fibers then react with the colored water containing the dye. In the reaction, the colored molecules are converted into very small colorless fragments of manganese oxide molecules. This method can remove 99% of the color in the water. In addition, the fibers can be used again and again. They have already published the results of their research in the 'Journal of Green Chemistry'.
