Manna Dey, the legendary vocalist of the subcontinent, was born on May 1, 1919 in a Bengali family in Kolkata. After living in Mumbai for a long time, he was now living permanently in Bangalore.
This famous artist Manna Dey started his career with playback in the film 'Tammanna' in 1943. So far he has given his voice in more than three and a half thousand songs. Many of these have become timeless hits with audiences.
Not only did Manna Dey sing in Bengali, she was equally popular in Hindi, Gujarati, Malayalam, Kannada as well. The Government of India honored him with Padma Shri in 1971, Padma Vibhushan in 2005 and Dadasaheb Phal in 2009 for his outstanding contribution to the world of music.
It is to be noted that recently he was suffering from senile diseases, respiratory and bladder problems. He was taken to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital after his condition deteriorated on Wednesday night. Since last September, he has been ill and admitted to the hospital several times. In his death, the world lost one of their favorite artists. The news of Manna Dey's death cast a shadow of mourning across India, including Kolkata.
