The Dhaka Times Desk The people of the Vadoma tribe live on the banks of a small river in the Zambesi River Valley in Zimbabwe, a South African nation. With only two fingers, like an ostrich, their feet!
One out of every four children born in this tribal group has two toes due to genetics. Their feet are missing the middle 3 fingers except the big toe and the little one.
This tribal group in the Kanyemba region of Zimbabwe lives mainly by hunting and gathering fruits.
It is known that every person of the Vadoma tribe is affected by a genetic disease called 'Lobster Claw Syndrome'. People with this disease are born without one or more toes.
The two fingers which the people of the Vadoma tribe have, are also inserted inwards. The shape of the foot is similar to that of an ostrich. So many people call them 'ostrich-titled' tribes.
Despite these physical handicaps, the people of the Vadoma tribe never consider themselves disabled. They believe that this type of toe structure allows them to climb trees faster and smoother.
These tribal people speak the local Dema language. So many people call them Dema people. The people of this tribe believe that they originated from a large African tree known as the monkey stick.
The people of the Vadoma tribe also believe that their ancestors came down from the trees to the ground to hunt and collect fruits. Today, this tribe is the only one in Africa that is not associated with agriculture.
Legend has it that the people of the Vadoma tribe stopped the Sona Kingdom of Korekore in the Mutapa region of Africa from becoming a European colony. That is why the people of this tribe could never be skilled in farming even though the fertile lands of that region came into their hands.
People of this tribe are also forbidden to marry outside their own clan. That is why this rare structural feature of the toe has never spread to any other group.
