Narail representative In the current spawning season of various species of fish in Narail, spawning fish are being caught freely from various canals and rivers of the district. These fish with eggs are also being sold openly in the market. However, there is no news that the law enforcement agency has taken any action against the concerned criminals so far.
It is revealed that at least 30 species of fish have already disappeared from the rivers of the district as this suicidal act of spawning has been going on for years. The remaining species are also on the verge of extinction. According to the related sources, usually in the rivers, canals and lakes, different species of fish lay eggs between Baisakh and Shravana months. The molecules that are released from the eggs later grow up and maintain the balance of the fish in nature. However, these egg-bearing fish are being caught by strategy. And the hatchlings of those fish that survive are also attacked anew. At this time, a class of illegal pollinators went down to collect pollinators from rivers, canals and banks. Various materials are used for collecting the larvae including thin nets, Beuchi nets. Most worryingly, only the desired fish molecules are separated from the different species of fish collected and the remaining species are discarded carelessly where they are wasted. Fishermen said that even 15-16 years ago, a lot of local fish species were available in Madhumati, Navaganga, Chitra and Kajala rivers of the district. However, due to fishing for eggs and spoilage of larvae over the years, at least 30 species of fish including Sarpunti, Veda, Pabda, Baush, Kalbaush, Veish, Chaminda, Chapila have already disappeared from these rivers. Apart from this, fish like pangas, tengra, golsha, bele etc. of the river are also on the way to extinction.
Although the activities of illegal egg-bearing fish and renu pona hunters can be seen everywhere in the district, their number is relatively high in Kalia and Sadar upazilas. The festival of collecting egg-bearing fish and larvae is going on from Afra to Tularampur in Kajala river of Sadar upazila and from Gobra to Perli in Chitra river and from Baradia to Baripara in Navaganga river in Kalia upazila. Unscrupulous hunters from different parts of the district throng these areas every year from Baishakh to Shravan month. When contacted in this regard, Narail District Fisheries Officer Golam Rabbani said that there is no clear ban on hunting fish with eggs other than Hilsa. However, hunting fish with eggs is inhumane.
