Sensational Biswajit murder case verdict today

The Dhaka Times Desk The verdict in the sensational Biswajit murder case will be announced today. Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal 4 judge ABM Nizamul Haque will announce the verdict of the discussed case.

On December 9, 2012, during the hartal program called by 18 like-minded parties including the BNP, Biswajit Das, an innocent tailor shopkeeper, was brutally murdered by Jagannath University Chhatra League leaders and activists in front of Victoria Park in Old Dhaka. At that time they openly killed Biswajit by hacking him with a chapati and beating him with a rod. Seeing this horrific event on TV, there was a storm of discussion, criticism and condemnation in the country and abroad. The people of the country were shocked to see such a brutal scene.

The verdict in this murder case is going to be announced after one year of the sensational murder. 8 accused involved in this incident are in jail but 13 accused are absconding. According to law, the judgment of the case will be announced only in the presence of the arrested accused and in the absence of the fugitives. Relatives and lawyers of deceased Biswajit are hoping for the highest punishment (death penalty) for the accused in the verdict. On the other hand, the absconding accused are still suffering from insecurity as they have not been arrested.

Biswajit's father Anant Das told the media, 'I want those who are killing my son to be hanged.' The rest is for the court to consider. Speedy Trial Tribunal 4 PP (Public Prosecutor) Md. Rafiqul Islam said in this regard, I hope that the verdict will ensure exemplary and maximum punishment for the accused. Besides, those who are absconding in this murder case will also be arrested and brought under trial.

It is to be noted that on the day and night of Biswajit's murder, Sub-Inspector (SI) Jalal Ahmed filed a case under Section 302 and 34 of the Bangladesh Penal Code accusing 25 unknown persons at Sutrapur police station. Besides, on December 13, a Supreme Court lawyer filed another irregular case in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court of Dhaka as a plaintiff. On December 19, the arrested accused Rafiqul Islam Shakeel, GM Rasheduzzaman Shawon, Emdadul Haque Emdad, Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid gave a confessional statement to the judicial magistrate under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Considering the public importance, the case was sent to Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 for quick disposal on June 13 this year.
