Experts say this bank heist is not just an adventure - it's a novelty. This is the first time in the history of the country that such a novel bank robbery happened.
The nation was shocked by the fact that a huge sum of money was looted from the main branch of Sonali Bank in Kishoreganj last Sunday. There are many questions in the public mind as to how this 'fancy' robbery happened despite the round-the-clock police guard in the security of that branch. The law and order forces continued to work with maximum strength to uncover the mystery of this incredible sign, but the mysterious young man named 'Sohail' could not be found or identified. However, there is no end to the excitement of the curious people about the underground tunnel. Police Dhaka Range DIG SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman also gave such information while talking to reporters after visiting the scene on Monday afternoon. Referring to this as a novel type of crime, he told the media, 'I don't know that such an incident has happened in Bangladesh before. It may have happened in the past. However, such an incident did not happen in the recent past.'
According to media reports citing eyewitnesses who visited the scene, the branch of Sonali Bank is located in a two-storey building on Isha Khan Road, the main road in Rathkhola area of Kishoreganj district city. On its eastern side there is a lane of about 6 feet. The tunnel was made from the first room of the late language soldier Aminul Haque's tin shed house adjacent to the lane. A tunnel about 18 feet long, dug through the floor of the room at the shortest distance from the vault of the bank, ended under the pavement of the alley and reached the floor of the vault. Just like centering is done in the building, bamboo poles are placed on both sides of the tunnel and bamboo timber on top - so that it does not collapse. Electricity cables are also laid to provide lighting in the tunnel. A person can travel through the tunnel about 3.5 feet high and 3 feet wide with relative ease. The police officials have given the idea that it took at least 6 months to do this work. The miscreants looted Tk 16.40 million from the vault through this tunnel on Friday or Saturday when the bank was closed.
The police said that the name of the tenant of that room in the house is Sohail. The police believe that the young man is involved in this heinous robbery incident. It is believed that he moved into the house as a tenant a couple of years ago by pre-planning. For this reason, the law enforcement agencies are giving utmost importance to the identity and finding of the youth, along with other matters of investigation. To identify his identity, the police have already detained and interrogated 2 women and 2 men who may be known to Sohail. All questions will be answered. On the other hand, DIG Nuruzzaman said that any major incident can happen. But we are hopeful that the way the investigation is progressing, everything will come out soon.
It should be noted that about 8 years ago, a thief entered this branch using a ventilator on the second floor of the bank. However, there was no damage because there was no money in the second floor.
