The Dhaka Times Desk Egypt's ousted President Morsi is on trial for espionage and terrorism in a court in the country. In addition to Morsi, the trial of 35 other top leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood has begun in the same case.
Morsi is the elected president of Egypt and is the top leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. But shortly after being elected, he was ousted by the military in July last year amid intense protests and protests across the country, including the capital, against the rule of Islamist Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Morsi.
Morsi was arrested shortly after being removed from power and put on trial on various charges. Several charges have been brought against Morsi, but the latest case of espionage and supporting terrorism has started in the Cairo court.
The espionage and support for terrorism case states, 'Morsi and some top leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood had direct links with some international Islamic extremist groups. These organizations are, Palestinian Hamas, Lebanon's Hezbollah And The Revolutionary Guards of Iran.
Meanwhile, supporters of Egypt's Islamist party Muslim Brotherhood claim that Morsi is the legitimate president of Egypt and Morsi is innocent, he is being unfairly prosecuted.
Analysts on Morsi's trial say that if Morsi is found guilty in this trial, he may face the death penalty. Morsi is currently being held in the Burj al-Arab prison, but was flown by helicopter to the police academy in the capital Cairo for trial. He will be sent back to prison after the court hearing.
Qatar based international media Al-Jazeera Their report, however, stated that Morsi is an elected president and the various charges brought against him are part of a larger conspiracy in Egypt.
It should be noted that in July 2013, the current army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi played a direct role in the removal of Morsi.
