The Dhaka Times Desk As people do not want to climb the stairs through the normal footoverbridge, moving stairs (elevator) are sitting on the Banani footoverbridge. This initiative of the government is to make the pedestrians interested in using the footoverbridge.

Bangladesh is a populous country, many roads in our country are so dangerous that accidents are happening here constantly. Most urban road accidents occur due to people crossing the road unconsciously. Also, traffic congestion is created due to people crossing over the road at busy junctions.
Numerous footoverbridges have been installed in all the divisional cities and busy district cities across the country including Dhaka so that pedestrians can cross the road safely and comfortably. In some places, conscious people use these footoverbridges, but in some places, the overbridges are torn down and taken over by hawkers. Basically, the footoverbridges are not being used properly because the pedestrians risk their lives without crossing the road through these overbridges.

According to a statistic, there are only 68 footover bridges in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. However, some of these footoverbridges now have full-fledged pedestrian crossings. Due to the reluctance of all other users, it has become a haven for hawkers.
This time, the work of setting up a moving staircase at a cost of about one and a half crore taka has started on a footover bridge in Banani of the capital. Basically, this initiative is to encourage pedestrians to use the overbridge instead of crossing the road at risk.
6,750 people can cross the road every hour with this high capacity complete and flexible escalator brought from Malaysia. This escalator will be managed by a manager at all times so that it will not be a problem to operate.

Project Director Dhaka City Corporation Supervising Engineer Md. Sehabullah He said, "People are constantly crossing the roads of Dhaka at risk, resulting in traffic jams with accidents. Even if there is an overbridge, people don't use it just because they have to climb up the stairs. So we are installing escalators on footoverbridges to attract them.”
He also said, "We have initially installed escalators at Chairmanbari-adjacent footbridge in Banani, but depending on its success, escalators will also be installed in other footover bridges in Dhaka."
Such initiatives are highly commendable to make people interested in using footoverbridges, not only in Bangladesh, escalators are used to climb overbridges. In many countries of the world, including India, Malaysia, escalators have been installed on footoverbridges keeping in mind the convenience of pedestrians. But now about to see how long this escalator lasts with proper maintenance.
