Dhaka Times Desk The murder trial of Saiful Alam Mukul, editor of Daily Runner published from Jessore, has not ended even after 14 years. On the night of 30 August 1998, he died in a bomb attack by miscreants at Charkhamba intersection in the city. Today, August 30, is his 14th death anniversary. We pray for the forgiveness of the departed soul of this late journalist.
Many journalists have been killed in the country in the last 40 years. Journalist Saiful Alam Mukul is one of the personalities involved in the killing of journalists. He did not care about any terrorists and smugglers. Thus we have seen the names of identified terrorists and smugglers of the area published in the Daily Runner newspaper. His father Gholam Majed Sahib was a renowned journalist of the region. Saiful Alam Mukul started his career as a journalist. He bowed down to no one. What is true is written plainly. And so he had to be told like this. Following his footsteps, his 21-year-old son Anjan was also killed. Because like fathers and grandfathers, he was becoming rebellious.
Despite this deadlock, several organizations of journalists in Jessore are holding various programs on his death anniversary every year. This time, on the occasion of the death anniversary, two unions of journalists, including Jessore Press Club, have organized a rally, wreath laying at the martyr's monument, a discussion meeting and a Milad mahfil.
Sources in the family of the deceased journalist Mukul, the plaintiff in the case, and the lawyer of the state said that the day after the incident, Hafiza Akhter Shirin, the wife of the deceased, filed a murder case in Jessore Kotyali police station. However, he did not mention anyone's name in the case.
Later, the investigating officer, CID Jessore Zone, then Additional Superintendent of Police Dulal Uddin Akand filed a charge sheet in the court on April 23, 1999, accusing 22 people including former BNP Information Minister Tariqul Islam and Bangladesh Workers Party Politburo member Iqbal Kabir Zahid.
Due to political influence and legal complications, the proceedings of this case stopped at some point. Later the sensational case was dismissed by the High Court. After a long time in 2005, a special bench of the High Court revived the Mukul murder case and ordered an extended investigation. Then on December 21 of that year, CID officer Moula Bux filed a supplementary charge sheet in the court including the names of two new people in his investigation.
On June 15, 2006, Jessore's Special Tribunal-3 and Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 charged 22 people in the Mukul murder case, at which time the then Minister Tariqul Islam and another accused named Rupam were acquitted. After a long time, in 2010, the testimony of 25 witnesses in this case was completed in the Second Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge of Jessore.
Public prosecutor AZM Feroze, the lawyer of the state side, said that the special representative of Faraji Ajmal Hossain, the accused in this case, applied to a bench of the High Court to be exempted from the case. But since the application of Faraji Ajmal Hossain has not been settled for a long time, the proceedings of the case in the lower court are closed.
