It has been reported that the construction of a bridge over the Khoai River at a cost of 3 crore taka in Shaistaganj Upazila of Habiganj has not been completed in 8 years. Although the upper roof, beam of the bridge has been constructed, the slope and guarding are yet to be constructed. Besides, the work of connecting road on both sides is still left. The bridge is the trust of thousands of people in the eastern part of the river. The bridge is of no use as there is no connecting road. The long-standing dream of the people of that area is to build a bridge at a place called Kazirkhil on the Khoai river in Chunarughat upazila. There is frustration among the people as the work has not been completed for a long time.

Flowing from India, the Khoai River divided the population of several unions of the upazila. The locals are known as the eastern and western areas of the river. The construction of the bridge will bring hope in the communication of the people of the eastern region. The development in communication will be massive. According to the local LGED office sources, the construction work of the bridge over the Khoai river started in 2004 at Kazirkhil on the Srikuta-Muraband road of the upazila during the four-party coalition government. After construction of only two spans of the bridge, the work on the bridge was suddenly stopped due to unknown reasons. After the grand coalition government came to power, in early 2010, a contractor named M/s Azad & Brothers of Dhaka started working again by accepting a tender of Tk 1 crore 55 lakh.

The contractor has brought the work of the bridge to the final stage, but the bridge has not been opened for traffic as the work of sloping and guarding is still pending. As a result, the suffering of people in the eastern region is increasing day by day. Engineer Kiran Chandra Dev said that the construction work of this bridge over the Khoai River was undertaken at a cost of about 3 crore rupees. Expenditure accounts of the previous contractor are not known. However, it is believed that this work was started with a tender of one and a half crore rupees. Presently M/s Azad & Brothers contractor company is working on bridge construction at a cost of Tk 1 crore 55 lakh.

The bridge will be inaugurated only after the work is completed. Local UP Chairman Syed Liaquat Hasan said that the four-party coalition government had started the bridge work. He hopes that the current government will quickly finish the rest of the work on the bridge and open it to the public. Talking to the local people in this regard, it is known that when the bridge work is completed, 2 unions in the southern region of the upazila Bahubal, Parkul tea garden, Sri Bari tea garden, Daragaon tea garden, Hatimara tea garden, No. 8 Satyajuri, No. 9 Ranigaon, No. 10 Mirashi Union will open new doors in public communication.

Besides, it will be easier to buy and sell the agricultural products produced in that area to district headquarters, upazila cities and capitals in different cities of the country. In this, the farmers will get a fair price for their produce and the people of the 3 Unions of the Eastern Region who are deprived of communication will go one step further in the field of communication. Therefore, the local residents have demanded that the work of this bridge be completed quickly and opened for the public.
