Tourists come to Cox's Bazar-Saint Martin area almost all the time of the year. Saint Martin's reputation as Cox's Bazar's ocean luxury and algae island is world-class. This area is full of local and foreign tourists. But several accidents in recent times have made the tourists very worried.
The question has arisen among the people of the country that why the world's longest sea port Cox's Bazar and the famous coral island St. Martin are so neglected today. At least the issues of accidents are coming up again and again. Last April 14, on the first day of Bengali New Year, four students drowned while visiting Saint Martin. Two people are still missing. This incident has raised new questions about the security of Saint Martin. Many have raised questions about security and said that if there are any places that are not safe for tourists, it is the responsibility of the local administration to identify them. But why the local administration did not do it until now.
According to information, at least 85 people have drowned in Cox's Bazar sea in the last 12 years. On the other hand, 14 tourists died in Saint Martin. 111 km of Cox's Bazar's 120 km beach is still completely or partially unprotected. Who will take responsibility if an accident happens on this unprotected beach? This is the question of every conscious citizen of the country.
According to the information received, in 1992, as part of the first tourism policy, it was said to take a master plan especially for Cox's Bazar. The National Tourism Policy, 2010, formulated exactly 18 years after this, states that initiatives will be taken to develop ideal holiday tourism destinations centered on Cox's Bazar, Teknaf, St. Martin and Sona Island, the world's longest uninterrupted beaches.
According to the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index published last year, Bangladesh is ranked 123 out of 140 countries. This list has been prepared by the World Economic Forum by considering 14 issues including infrastructure development, communication system development, security system assurance, healthcare.
But the reality is quite different. Those plans and policies have not been implemented, nothing can be seen in reality. One accident after another is making such a place of tourism increasingly controversial and unacceptable. Now domestic and foreign tourists are also thinking about security.
In such a situation, the government and non-governmental organizations have to work to solve the security and various problems of all the tourist areas of Bangladesh including Cox's Bazar and St. Martin. Risky places are marked with red flags and the safety of tourists must be ensured. Otherwise, the world's longest beach will become a once-uninhabited wasteland in an unprotected state - no one wants that.
