The Dhaka Times Desk Due to the continuous rise of water in various rivers of the country, the flood situation has worsened in vast areas. Rivers are flowing above the danger line.
Faridpur
Padma river water continues to rise in Faridpur for the past one week. On the late night of September 28, a crack appeared in the protection dam of Faridpur town in Bhajandanga and Sadipur areas, causing panic among the people. Since night local people are trying to protect the dam breach.
Madukhali (Faridpur)
Hundreds of houses have been washed away by the Madhumati river flowing through the Kamarkhali union on the western border of Faridpur's Madhukhali upazila. About a thousand acres of crop land has gone under the river. About 200 homesteads in about 5 villages of Madukhali upazila are under threat of demolition. Around a hundred affected families have taken shelter in Kusumadi, Phulbaria villages of neighboring Magura district. During the on-site inspection, it can be seen that hundreds of houses of Chargoeshpur, Goeshpur, Fulbaria, Salamatpur, Gandakhali and Arpara villages of Madukhali upazila have already disappeared under the river. The victims said that the sudden rise of water in the Madhumati river caused the erosion.
Sherpur
Due to the continuous rise in the old Brahmaputra river and the water from the hills, a large area of Kamar Char, Char Mucharia, Char Pakhmari, Balair Char and Betmari-Ghugharakandi union has been flooded in Sherpur district. Member of Parliament of Sherpur Sadar Constituency Atiur Rahman Atiq, Sadar Upazila Chairman Alhaj Ilyas Uddin and Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Irene Farzana visited the flood affected areas.
Melandah (Jamalpur)
The flood situation worsened in Melandhe of Jamalpur. Crop lands, fields and fields of 11 unions of the upazila have been submerged in flood water. All educational institutions of the upazila have announced closure.
Bakshiganj (Jamalpur)
Flood situation in Bakshiganj is stable. About 40 thousand people in Merurchar, Sadhurpara, Bagarchar and Nilakxia Union. A primary school building has been swept away by the river. Teaching has stopped in 15 educational institutions. Due to excessive drought or scorching heat, people are suffering from various diseases in flooded areas.
Sariakandi (Bogra)
On September 28, after breaking a new dam in Chandanbaisha, the water of Yamuna overflowed the grounds of PN High School and entered Chandanbaisha market. As the water continues to rise, hundreds of villages in Qutubpur, Kamalpur, Velabari and Fulbari Unions including Chandanbaisha, Baluchar, Ghughumari, Rouhadah, Karitala have been inundated anew. As the Chandanbaisha market has sunk, the bazaar has been built on the adjacent grove and embankment. People do not think it is safe to stay there as the river erosion and water level continue to rise.
Gopalpur (Tangail)
The Tarakandi-Bhuyapur flood control dam is now facing serious threat due to massive breach in Yamuna. The Yamuna river is just 50 yards away from the dam in Bashuria village of Pinna union. Going to the scene yesterday morning on Saturday, it was seen that the people of the ten villages of the broken dam were crying.
Bhangura (Pabna)
In the past few days, the flood situation in Bhangura upazila has seriously deteriorated due to abnormal increase in the water of Baral and Gumani rivers in Pabna. 100 villages of five unions and Menda Mohalla of Bhangura municipality were inundated. About 96 lakhs worth of fish from 30 barapitas of the upazila were swept away by the flood.
Phulchari (Gaibandha)
Flood situation remains unchanged at Phulchhari in Gaibandha. Even though the Brahmaputra water has not increased in the next 24 hours from Friday morning, there is extreme suffering among the water-bound people. There is a shortage of food and clean water. Besides, the crisis of cow-fodder is more acute. Tubewells in waterlogged areas have sunk and people are drinking contaminated river water.
