The Dhaka Times Desk Since 2000, about 26 nuclear bomb-equivalent explosions have occurred in our Earth's atmosphere. And asteroids are responsible for all these explosions. The California-based asteroid hunting group made the announcement Saturday at a Seattle museum.
Named B612, the agency detects and tracks asteroids in space as they can hit Earth at any time. According to the Organization for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons policy, they detect nuclear detonations that occur around the world. They have seen more than two dozen nuclear explosions occur around the world. Many of which contain more than 600 kilotons of nuclear explosives. Most rocks explode outside the atmosphere at a certain height, some of which may reach the Earth's surface. Still, both organizations say they should keep a closer eye on these extraterrestrial stars.
B612, with their rich funding, has set up the world's first orbiting telescope. The primary function of this telescope is to monitor the movement of asteroids outside the Earth. Ed Lowe is a former astronaut and is the founder of this B612. He said of the telescope, the estimated cost to build the telescope was $250 million, most of which came from private donations. They have been able to detect about 200,000 asteroids so far through this telescope. Of which 1000 asteroids are detected every year by various telescopes. As such, this telescope can be considered a success on its maiden voyage.
Most organizations believe that most of the asteroids they have been able to detect are around a kilometer or more in radius. But detecting smaller asteroids is often not possible. We don't know when and where any type of asteroid will hit, so it's really hard to tell. On February 15, 2013, an asteroid with a radius of about 18 meters hit Chernobyl, Russia.
We only try to detect large asteroids and make sure they don't hit Earth. Beyond that, it's hard to actually detect any asteroids that hit. These facts about asteroids are presented by the founder of B612. He also said that there are about 10,000 such asteroids outside the earth, if one of them hits the earth, it will cause serious damage to us. Curator of the Natural History Museum Denton Abel He said that numerous comets and asteroids are constantly hitting our earth's atmosphere, only a small number of them can reach the earth's surface. Abel says it's not that surprising, but if more of them were to come to Earth, it would bring a dire message.
Note that giant dinosaurs are believed to have disappeared from the earth millions of years ago due to asteroid impact. NASA has already announced a separate budget for measures against asteroids.
