The Dhaka Times Desk Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the transport sector has entered a new era with the introduction of retro-reflective number plates with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for motor vehicles with the aim of streamlining and improving services. The Prime Minister said this while inaugurating the digital registration certificate with this system in his office yesterday morning on October 31.
The Prime Minister also said that this digital system has been launched to ensure the benefits of all, including motor vehicle owners, drivers, regulators and law and order enforcers. The Prime Minister also expressed hope that this new system will improve the service quality of the vehicle sector and increase the capacity and efficiency of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and ensure transparency and accountability. will know He thanked Machine Tools Factory for their cooperation in this digitization of BRTA. The Prime Minister appealed to the people to obey traffic laws and directed the Ministry of Communications and Home Affairs to create mass awareness about traffic laws among the general public. In this regard, he emphasized on the need to first teach school students about traffic laws.
Reiterating her government's commitment to build a 'Digital Bangladesh' by 2021, the Prime Minister said, for this purpose, we have already arranged to pay motor vehicle taxes and fees through online banking. Various e-services including e-governance, e-commerce, e-health, e-education, e-banking have been introduced. He said that the present government is working hard to make people's life easy and comfortable by introducing modern technology in keeping with the changing world.
Later, Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the retro-reflective number plate, radio frequency identification tag and digital registration certificate program for motor vehicles by handing over a digital number plate to the chairman of BRTA.
Communications Minister Obaidul Quader, Army Chief and BMTF Chairman General Iqbal Karim Bhuiya, Road Department Acting Secretary MAN Siddiqui, BRTA Chairman Ayubur Rahman Khan and BMTF Managing Director Brigadier General Saifur Rahman spoke on the occasion. According to sources, the Army-led BMTF will construct, operate and maintain the new system on a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) basis for the next 15 years. BRTA will give 600 crore rupees to BMTF in the first 5 years for this.
It should be noted that in this system, a type of number plate with registration number has been made mandatory for every vehicle, which can be seen both day and night. It will have radio frequency to identify these vehicles easily. Even if a motor vehicle flees the scene after an accident, the digital plate will help identify it. The system will also detect fake number plates and use of the same number on different vehicles. It is known that earlier the thieves used fake number plates on cars. The introduction of this digital system will greatly benefit the public by preventing car theft, preventing accidents. Although this method will be somewhat expensive in the initial stage. However, some sacrifices have to be made for good things - concerned officials expressed optimism.
