The Dhaka Times Desk An abandoned mother in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal sold her newborn baby for Rs 13,000. Gauri Shah, a 32-year-old woman, lives in a slum near the railway line in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.

Gauri Shah already has three daughters who are aged 3 years, 4 years and 8 years respectively. Her husband left her about eight months ago. The child she sold was a boy. She sold her child to a childless couple. The child was rescued and is currently under the care of a child shelter. After the child was sold, her neighbors reported the matter to a local human rights organization. They came and rescued the child.

The child was born on May 25. After his birth, his mother started thinking about how she will raise this child alone. She then sells her child to a childless couple. When Gauri Shah later rescued the child and returned it, she refused to accept the child. When asked about it, he says he has no regrets about it. His family's current source of income is his 70-year-old mother who supports them by begging. She believes selling her child was the best decision for her.

She says she fell into the sea after her husband left eight months ago. How will she raise these children of hers? Before the birth of her new child, she borrowed Rs 100 from neighbors to meet her hospital treatment expenses, which she was unable to repay. She claims that she will accept the child if the government helps her with work. But the state government says she has been given 60 days if she does not accept the child within that time, then it will be put up for state adoption.
