Hartal today to protest Farooqui's murder: 3 arrested so far

The Dhaka Times Desk The Islami Chhatra Sena has called for a nationwide half-day hartal in protest against the brutal killing of prominent Islamic researcher Nurul Islam Farooqui, anchor of Channel Eye's Islamic programme. Meanwhile, one more person has been arrested for his involvement in Farooqui's murder. The number of arrests is 3.

Islami Chhatra Sena president Nurul Haque Chishti announced the strike at a press conference in Fakirapool on Saturday in protest against the murder of Maulana Nurul Islam Farooqui, presenter of Channel I's Islamic programs 'Hajj Kafela' and 'Shaanti Pathe'. It was informed in the press conference that the flood-affected districts will remain exempt from the strike.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested a person named Mohammad Yusuf in connection with the murder of Maulana Nurul Islam Farooqui. He was arrested from Chauddagram area of Comilla on Saturday night.

Earlier on Saturday morning, the police arrested two people, including a woman, for their involvement in Farooqui's murder. Two people named Mahmuda Khatun and Shariful Islam were arrested from Murapara of Rupganj in Narayanganj early Saturday morning. The arrested Mahmuda and Shariful are being interrogated at the Mintu Road detective office in the capital. Meanwhile, this case has been handed over to the detective police.

It is to be noted that last Wednesday around 8:00 p.m., 8/9 terrorists entered the second-floor rented house of house No. 74 in East Rajabazar of Sherebangla Nagar, detained his wife and other family members and killed Farooqui by slitting his throat. The deceased Farooqui was also the international secretary of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat and member of the presidium of Bangladesh Islamic Front (MATIN). He was Khatib of Supreme Court Jame Masjid.
