Students beware: Caution issued for admission in 12 private universities

The Dhaka Times Desk The University Grants Commission has issued a warning for admission in 12 universities. Students and parents of 48 campuses of 12 private universities have been warned.

In a press release of the university watchdog on Monday, it was informed that some of the campuses of these universities are unauthorized, some of them have disputes over the ownership of campuses and some campuses have been revoked, but they are still working with the suspension of the court.

The alerted universities are: Prime University, Darul Ihsan University, Southern University, Northern University, Ebais University, BGC Trust University, Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology, The People's University, America Bangladesh University, International Islamic University, Queen's University and Shanta Mariam University of Creative Technology. The University Grants Commission has also published the addresses of the campuses of these universities where caution has been advised for admission.

Even though the University Grants Commission has taken action against the universities operating the campuses illegally, the commission has said that the unauthorized campuses are being run with the stay of the court. The University Grants Commission says, 'It is not possible to take action against them due to the suspension of the court.'

Unauthorized Campuses:

Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology:
(a) House No-77, Road No-19, Sector-11, Uttara, Dhaka
(b) House No-05, Road, No-03, Sector-06, Uttara, Dhaka
(c) ARA Centre- 69/E, Biruttam Kazi Nuruzzaman Road, Panthpath, Dhaka
(d) 53/1, Purana Paltan, Lane, Dhaka and
(e) Capital Tower, Mirpur Road, Mirpur-1, Dhaka. These campuses are being run illegally.

The People's University:

(a) F-75/B, North Badda, Dhaka-1212 and
(b) Al Raji Compsnox, Digant TV Bhawan, 166/167 Purana Paltan Campus is unauthorized.

On the other hand, International Islamic University of Chittagong Bahaddarhat (Women's Branch) and Shanta Mariam University of Creative Technology, Building No. 04, Mirpur Road, South Kalyanpur branch has been declared unauthorized by the University Grants Commission.

Northern University:

(a) 24, Mirpur Road (Opposite Dhaka College)
(b) Globe Centre, Dhaka-1205 and
(c) 93, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, Karwan Bazar Branch is also unauthorized.

Southern University:

Boyra in Khulna, Mazampur in Kushtia, Satmasjid Road in Dhanmondi and Carmichael College Road branch campuses in Rangpur's Lalbagh area are unauthorized.

Proceedings under court order:

UGC says that Darul Ihsan University has numerous unauthorized campuses in different regions of Bangladesh, and the report of the judicial inquiry commission formed on the order of the President has been submitted to the Ministry of Education to close them.

As the appeal of the court is not settled, Prime University, Mirpur-1 Darus Salam Road and Uttara 87 BNS Center can conduct related activities in the main campus, but they have been ordered not to publish any notification regarding the admission of students.

The four unauthorized campuses of Prime University are:

(a) House-352/B, Old, 31/AB New Road- 27/A Old
(b) Maqbool Pasnaja, 228/B, Pragti Samani, Baridhara
(c) Center Point Concord, 5th Floor, 14/A, 31/A, Tejkunipara, Farmgate, Tejgaon and
(d) Molinsak Tower, 13th & 14th Floor, Chiriakhana Road, Mirpur-1.

The notification said that the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Home Affairs have already been instructed to evacuate these campuses.

3 Unauthorized Campuses of Southern University:

(a) MM Ali Road, Dampara
(b) OR Nizam Road, GEC and
(c) Halishahar, Chittagong.

On the other hand, Northern University's Khulna campus, Northern University's outer campus in Rajshahi and Khulna are unauthorized.
BGC Trust University Chittagong's OR Nizam Road Campus is also unauthorized.

Ibis University:

(a) House-27, Road-06, Mohammadia, Housing Society (Main Road), Mohammadpur, Dhaka-1207 and
(b) House-13, Road-35, Sector-07, Uttara, Dhaka-1230. UGC has said that the campus is unauthorized.

Proceedings with court approval after closure: UGC said that letters have been sent to the concerned District Administrators to evict other illegal campuses of America Bangladesh University, Dhaka 54/1, Pragati Samari, Baridhara-Naddar campus, which are unauthorized as per High Court verdict.

As per the UGC list, the unauthorized and evictable campuses of America Bangladesh University are:

(a) 95, BTI Building, Farmgate
(b) 71/C, Asad Avenue
(c) 107/1, Box Calvert Road, Nayapalton
(d) 743, Sat Masjid Road, Dhanmondi
(e) 159/D, Tejgaon Industrial Area
(f) Meherba Pasnaja, 33 Topkhana Road
(g) 5/FGH, Darus Salam Road, Sangeeta Bhavan, Mirpur-1
(h) House-13, Road-35, Sector-7, Uttara
(j) 83/3/A, Johnny Tower Jatrabari Crossroads
(j) Rosedale, House-1, Road-4, Gulshan Badda Link Road
(k) House- 113, Road- 4, Block-B, Banani
(l) 1, Johnson Road, Roy Saheb Bazar and
(D) 571, East Kazipara, Mirpur.

Three illegal campuses of America Bangladesh University outside Dhaka:

(a) Dana Plaza, Chowrasta, Gazipur
(b) Three Heads, Railgate, Bogra and
(c) 145, Natore Road, Talaimari, Rajshahi.

According to the University Grants Commissioner's list, Queen's University Bannir House-43/E, Road 17/Campus is also unauthorized. Also, there are disputes over ownership in several universities, according to the University Grants Commission.
