The Dhaka Times Desk Most smart people make mistakes in selecting English words to express a topic. Inc. magazine columnist Jeff Haden expressed this opinion. Today we are going to give you some of the most common mistakes and see if you get them wrong.
If you were to choose a few words to describe a person's facial expression, if you were a smart person, you might say intelligent, poised, persuasive, funny, weird, and a few others. But in reality most people make some grammatical mistake in this case and mostly in word choice. Our today's event is with some words.
1. Irregardless and unthaw
regardless means nevertheless and thaw means to melt or dissolve. Adding a prefix to these two words actually makes them no more words. Hence the above two words are wrong.
2. Bring and take
These two words are used to mean commands or instructions. Bring is to bring something from someone and take is to take something from you.
3. A lot and a lot
Note the two spellings Alot means philosophy and you try to tell someone about the role a lot.
4. I, me and myself
The key in this case is how you express yourself. Most of the time, mistakes are made here. An example is mark and I went to the meeting. Another similar field is mark and I will attend the meeting. What seems okay? No it is wrong in this case mark and myself will attend the meeting. I means me, me means me and myself means myself. Whenever me and I feel awkward in a sentence, use myself.
5. Impact, affect and effect
Most smart people use these three words to describe the effect of something. Pretty funny isn't it! Because Impact means hit, affect means effect and effect means result. Here effect is a noun not a verb. But you can use Impact to mean the result of an effect on something.
6. Loose and loose
Loose means loose, lose means to lose. Don't forget to choose the correct word field.
7. Principle and principal
Principle is the principle of a theory and on the other hand principal is the head of an educational institution.
8. Lay and lie
Use lay to place something or a place. Like He laid his keys on the table. Or Mark lay on the bed In this case Lying down should not be used as it will create a lot of confusion.
9. Borrow and lend
Borrow is used to borrow something small and lend is used to borrow something big. Like- Can you borrow me a dollar? And He lent me his car.
