Quoting a press release of the student camp sent after Ghulam Azam's death, the media said, 'This decision (opposing the independence war in 1971) has not only damaged him politically, but he has had to be absolved personally as well.'
It is said that the news media has sent the press release titled 'Requesting the publication of Golam Azam Saheb's correct resume' Assistant Publicity Editor of Chhatrashibir Md. Jamal Uddin has sent it to various media.
Chhatra Shibir also said in the press release, "Though there is enough reason to believe that Ghulam Azam took the wrong decision to oppose independence, dismayed by the role of the Indian ruling group that surrounds Bangladesh from three sides, this decision has not only damaged him politically, but he has also had to be excommunicated for it."
In the press release, they mentioned that the International Criminal Court in Dhaka (International Criminal Tribunal) admitted that Ghulam Azam was not directly involved in any crime during the Liberation War but 'sentenced him to 90 years in prison on the charge of Supreme Command Responsibility.'
It is to be noted that Jamaat-e-Islami former Ghulam Azam died while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on the night of October 23 while serving a 90-year prison sentence for crimes against humanity.
